The 8th Grade Bulldogs from Romeo Middle School opened their football season with a 0-0 tie with L’anse Creuse East on Tuesday, Sept 29. The Dogs held their ground in the trenches over their much larger opponents, which resulted in a stalemate at the line of scrimmage for both teams. This is the second 0-0 game for these teams in the last two years. The Defense came up big, led by linebackers PJ Butcher and Cooper Laurain. However, the game saving play of the game went to free safety Drew Cushingberry, who leapt in front of a potential touchdown pass to preserve the shutout and prevent a loss. The Bulldogs travel to Seneca for a game against the Jaguars Tuesday, October 6.
Romeo Middle School’s 8th grade Football team suffered a setback at the hands of Seneca Middle School, 28-0, on Tuesday, October 6. The Bulldogs kept the game close in the first half, but lost a few turnovers in the second half and had a large hole to try to dig out of. The Bulldogs will try to get on track next Tuesday, October 13 against L’anse Creuse Central.
The 8th Grade Football Team at Romeo Middle School has had a rollercoaster first half of the season. They stand presently at 1-1-1 after their first victory of the season over the Lancers of L’anse Creuse Central, 14-6. The Dogs finally put some points on the board, the first touchdown coming on a great pass from quarterback Charlie Roth to tight end Adam Davis after the offense held the ball for the entire 1st quarter. They almost hooked up for another touchdown on the same play in the third quarter, but Davis was stopped on the two yard line. Roth took the ball in after a LCC penalty put the ball one foot from the goal line. There was major emphasis on the offensive line after the last game, and two players (LT Steve Check and LG Cooper Laurain) moved into new positions, and stepped up huge for the Bulldogs, who were able to march down the field and put the ball in the endzone twice. Laurain, PJ Butcher, Mitch Hess, Myron Monroe (2 sacks), River DeLorenzo (Interception) and Paul LaBaere limited the Lancers to one first down all game with big hits and disciplined defense. The only points scored by LCC were on a kickoff return after Romeo scored their first touchdown. The Bulldogs travel to Algonquin MS for their next game on Tuesday, October 20.
The Romeo Middle School 8th grade Football Team played at Algonquin Middle School (Chippewa Valley) on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, winning their contest 23-16. The Bulldogs put together a strong effort in the trenches, led on the offensive line by center Tyler Culver and tackles Galen Simon and Steve Check. The defensive trench was powered by nose guard Graham Hughes and tackles Myron Monroe and Cody Stankiewicz. The focus of this week was to dominate the line of scrimmage, and the team was effective in their efforts. Touchdowns were scored by Adam Davis, Mitch Hess, and River DeLorenzo, with Davis scoring 2 2pt conversions, and Hess kicking an extra point. Romeo hosts Iroquois Middle School (Dakota) in their next game on Tuesday, October 27.
Romeo Middle School’s 8th grade Football team continued their winning ways with a 14-6 victory over Iroquois Middle School (Dakota) on Tuesday, October 27. The team was led by Charlie Roth, who stepped up and made key plays on offense, including a rushing touchdown. The other touchdown was scored by Mitch Hess, with Adam Davis tacking on a 2pt conversion. The defense was led by Davis, Paul LaBaere, Cooper Laurain, and PJ Butcher. The Bulldogs (3-1-1) close their season with the annual “Friendship Game” with inter-district rival, Powell Middle School. The action starts at 5:30pm on November 3rd at Barnabo field.
The 8th grade Football Team from Romeo Middle School closed out the 2009 Season on a four game winning streak, capped off with a 20-8 victory over their inter-district rival, Powell Middle School. PJ Butcher accounted for all three Bulldog touchdowns, including a 30 yard scamper after a blocked punt by Cooper Laurain, and provided several key tackles to bottle up Powell’s offensive attack. The Bulldogs were also led with stellar performances by Paul LaBaere, Mitch Hess, and Adam Davis (2pt conversion). The Bulldogs end the season 4-1-1.
