Powell Middle School Football 2010

Week 1 - 8th Grade

The 8th grade Bulldogs won their first game of the season against Lanse Creuse South 20-12. The boys played an excellent game despite the weather and field conditions.

The Bulldogs jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a TD pass from Brad Sorenson to Isahi Lara and a 3 yard TD run by Brad Sorenson. The Bulldogs scored on another TD pass in the third quarter from Brad Sorenson to Anthony Proia to finish the scoring.

The entire defense played a great game forcing many turnovers. Patrick Cashen recovered two fumbles and Austin Armstrong recovered a third. Leading the defense in tackles were Oliver Villagomez with six, Austin Armstrong with 4, Ronald Godbee with 4 and Sam Ebbitt with 3. Also playing strong games on defense were Trevor Atkinson, Reece Eller and Brad Charles.

On special teams, Brenden Leahy recovered a key onside kick to retain possession in the first half. The offense was led by 70 yards in rushing by James Males and great blocking by Matt Kresmery, Patrick Cashen, Austin Armstrong, Tommy Herron, Anthony Cacaj, Randy Velez, Reece Eller and Brad Charles. The Bulldogs travel to Wyandot next week. Great job boys!

 

Week 2 - 8th Grade

The Powell 8th grade lost a very tough game to a good Wyandot team 20-8 Sept. 28. After some early miscues, the Bulldogs were down 12-0 early in the game but the defense stepped up to keep them in the game.

In the third quarter, the Brad Sorenson connected on a 50 yard screen pass for a TD by James Males which was keyed by blocks by Kyle Jones and Anthony Harris. Andrew Behring added the 2 pt conversion on another key block by Anthony Harris and Anthony Proia.

The Bulldogs could get no closer after threatening once again. Playing excellent games were Austin Armstrong with 7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and a sack, Brad Charles with one sack and two tackles for loss, Patrick Cashen with 6 tackles with one tackle for loss, Oliver Villagomez with five tackles and one tackle for loss and Sam Ebbit with one sack and two tackles for loss.

Offensively, the Bulldogs struggles much of the day but Anthony Proia, Trevor Atkinson and Andrew Behring played solid games. Next week the Bulldogs take on L'anse Creuse North as they look to improve to 2-1 on year.

Week 3 - 8th Grade

The 8th grade Bulldogs improved to 2-1 after a victory over L'anse Creuse North by a score of 20-12 on Oct. 12.

Overcoming a very poor start, the Bulldogs found themselves down 6-0 after an early miscue. A touchdown run by Brad Sorenson and 2 point conversion gave them an 8-6 lead.

However, LCN turned around and scored once more for a 12-8 lead. Although the Bulldogs were outplaying their opponent, mistakes and missed opportunities greatly hurt them.

The second half was a different ballgame as Powell opened up with a 6 minute drive ending in a TD run by James Males to go up 14-12. In the 4th quarter, another TD run by James Males put the finishing touches on the scoring to make it 20-12.

The MVP of the game was the offensive line which dominated play throughout and were led by Sam Ebbitt, Brad Charles, Reece Eller, Matt Kresmery, Patrick Cashen, Tommy Herron, Avery Greer and Randy Velez. The Bulldogs ran for a whopping 271 yards as a team and were led by 204 yards by James Males, 30 by Brad Sorenson and 22 by Oliver Villagomez.

Defensively the Bulldogs had another strong game as they stuffed the rushing attack of their opponents. They were led by Patrick Cashen who had 3 sacks, Oliver Villagomez with 2 sacks and 7 tackles, Austin Armstrong with 5 tackles and one sack, 3 tackles by Brad Charles and Trevor Atkinson and fumble recoveries by Brenden Leahy and Gareth Allen.

The Bulldogs travel to take on a tough Seneca team next week.

Week 4 - 8th Grade

Powell lost a tough 15-6 contest to Seneca in a injury-plagued game that saw Powell without many key players throughout. Digging out of an early 13-0 hole and without a QB, James Males burst 70 yards through the left side of the line to make it 13-6. Powell threatened two more times inside Seneca's 10 yard line but came away with no points. Leading the way for the Bulldogs were James Males with 130 yards rushing and a TD, 9 tackles by Austin Armstrong and a sack by Brad Charles. Other strong games were had by Anthony Harris, Gareth Allen, Andrew Behring and Oliver Villagomez. The Bulldogs return home next week against L'anse Creuse East.
