Week 9: Fraser

Varsity:  The train-keeps-a-rollin' as the Dawgs pounded Fraser 39-14 to finish the season 8-1!  The Dawgs as usual struck early finding the end zone at 9:47 of the first quarter on a 29 yard TD pass from Nick Kosovich (7-15, 114 yds., 2 TD's) to Blake Cushingberry (4 rec., 93 yds., 2 TD's).  Kosovich took the ball in his own hands at the 10:38 mark of the second quarter and shucked and jived 52 yards to pay dirt.  A 2 point conversion pass from Kosovich to Cushingberry made the score 15-0.  Fraser made things a bit interesting at 6:07 of the second quarter on a 5 yard run to narrow the margin to 15-7  - but from this point on it was all Dawgs!  Brent Newsom (15 att., 117 yds., 1 TD) broke loose for a 31 yard run early in the third quarter and Robert Flinn split the uprights from 38 yards out to increase the score to 32-7 at the end of the third quarter.  Ben Brown (7 att., 35 yds., 1 TD) would finish the scoring for the Dawgs as he bulled in from the 1 yard line late in the fourth quarter.  Kosovich (3 att., 51 yds., 1 TD) and Bret McCarrey (3 att., 39 yds.) also contributed to the 242 total rushing yards for the Dawgs offense.  The tenacious Dawg defense was led by Erin Laurain (5 tackles - 1 for a loss) and Brendan Biache (4 tackles).  Jesse Schneider and Bobby Gintner each had interceptions and Jeff Walla tallied 1 sack.

J.V.: The J.V. finished the season with a shutout over Fraser 14-0.

Freshman:  Freshman win 42-8 to finish a PERFECT 9-0.  Congratulations to all the players and coaches on an outstanding season!

Week 8:  Grosse Pointe North

Varsity:
The DAWGS improved their record to 7-1 with a 32-0 Homecoming drubbing of GPN.  The story of this game was the stingy Dawg defense.  As a team they held the vaunted GPN running game to just 30 yards on 24 carries and forced 6 turnover (5 fumbles and 1 interception).  Matt Distelrath (5 tackles - 2 for losses) and Brendan Biache (4 tackles - 2 for loses and 1 Int.) led the swarm.  Offensively Brent Newsom (14 att., 67 yds., 1 TD) and Bret McCarrey (5 att., 50 yds.) paced the rushing attack while Nick Kosovich (15-23, 134yds., 1 TD) worked his magic in the pocket.  James Reynolds found the end zone for the first time this year on a 26 yard catch and with a bit of razzle-dazzle Adam Rashid tossed a 5 yarder to Nick Kosovich.  Nice work boys - revenge is SWEET!

Week 7:  Stevenson

Varsity:  Romeo 18 Stevenson 16 on a game ending field goal by Robbie Flinn.  The Dawgs started out with a bang as Blake Cushingberry (3rec., 90 yds.) found a wide open Joe Wilson (3 rec., 81 yds., 1 TD) for a 69 yard TD pass.  Then, at 4:23 of the first quarter Nick Kosovich (12-22, 139 yds., 1 TD) connected with Brent Brown (13 att., 55 yds.) from 20 yards out and just like that the Bulldogs had a 12-0 lead.  The second and third quarter was basically a punting contest.    At 11:05 of the fourth quarter Robert Flinn split the uprights from 28 yards out to increase the lead to 15-0 and it looked like smooth sailing for the Bulldogs.  That is until Stevenson promptly responded with a score of their own to make it 15-6 and from this point it was game on!  After the Dawgs went three-and-out Stevenson got the ball back at the Romeo 35 yard line and immediately scored to narrow the margin to 15-13.  After a second straight three-and-out for the Dawgs Stevenson put together a drive that found them with a fourth down on the Romeo 26 yard line with 1:25 seconds left on the clock.  Stevenson's kicker calmly nailed a 43 yard field goal to put Stevenson up 16-15!  Romeo got the ball back and started out on their own 27 yard line and 1:25 seconds to win the game.  Kosovich and the offense calmly drove down field and with the help of a couple of key runs from Brent Newsom (12 att., 61 yds.) and a pass interference call on Stevenson Romeo had a first-and-ten at the Stevenson 15 yard line with 14 seconds left on the clock.  Kosovich scrambled 14 yards down to the Stevenson one. The Dawgs made one failed attempt to get in from the one and stopped the clock with 1 second left in the game.  Robert "Ice Ice Baby" Flinn came in and with the coolness of an old time gun slinger drilled the winning field goal!  The Romeo defense held Stevenson to a meger 67 yards rushing and was led by Brendan Biache (6 tackles-1 sack) and James Reynolds (6 tackles -1 for a loss).  Derrick Gaffke (6 tackles - 3 for losses) and Matt Distelrath (4 tackles - 2 for losses) also pitched in.

J.V.:  The J.V. lost a hard fought game to Stevemson 21-14.

Week 6:  Port Huron Northern

Varsity:  The Dawgs scored early and often, on offense, defense and special teams as they rolled to a 56-12 victory over winless Port Huron Northern.  Brent Brown (2 TD's) started the scoring barrage on a 2 yard run at 10:15 of the first quarter.  Brown would tally his second rushing TD of the night from 8 yards out at 4:50 of the first quarter.  Late in the first quarter Nick Kosovich (7-10, 109 yards, 1 TD) connected with Joe Wilson ( 2 rec., 21 yds., 1 TD) and just like that the score was 19-0.  One play into their first drive of the second quarter Port Huron Northern fumbled the ball and Matthew Taylor scooped it up and ran 20 yards to pay dirt.  Brent Brown bulled his way in for the 2-point conversion and Romeo was up 27-0.  At 7:48 of the second quarter Robert Flinn split the uprights on a 21 yard field goal to widen the margin to 30-0.  Port Huron Northern did put a good drive together that finished on an 18 yard run to make the score 30-6.  On the ensuing kickoff they attempted an onside kick that Jimmy Kern (2 rec., 52 yds.) snagged and  returned 50 yards for a TD to make the score 37-6.  Robert Flinn drilled his second field goal for the night from 24 yards out to finish the first half scoring at 40-6.
Rick Roth (3-3, 60 yds) took over the controls of the potent Bulldog offense and scored on a 3 yard run at 5:40 of the third quarter to make the score 47-6.  And a botched punt snap by PHN forced their punter to step out of the back of the end zone for a safety at 3:25 of the third quarter to make the score 49-6.  Romeo would go up 56-6 when Bret McCarrey ( 8 att., 66 yds., 1 TD) finished the scoring for the Dawgs on a 2 yard run at 11:16 of the fourth quarter.  PHN punched in a TD as time ran out to make the final score 56-12.  Another stellar team effort by the Bulldog defense was led by James Reynolds (8 tackles, 1 sack), Jesse Schneider (6 tackles) and Derrick Gaffke (4 tackles, 1 for a loss).  Doug Lemerand and Matthew Taylor each recovered fumbles and Kyle Maxwell had 1 sack.

Week 5:  Sterling Heights

Varsity:  Horse Whipped!!  The Bulldogs raced to their third straight victory with a 42-15 victory over the Sterling Heights Stallions.  Once again the Dawgs were on the board first as Nick Kosovich (10-12, 85 yds., 2 TD's) connected with Blake Cushingberry (2 rec., 28 yds., 2 TD's) from 13 yards out at the 5:48 mark of the first quarter.  Kosovich took things upon himself and scampered in from 27 yards out at 2:36 of the first quarter to put put Romeo up 14-0.  Sterling Heights then went on an 80 yard march that took over 8 minutes off the clock scoring on an 8 yard pass to make the score 14-7.  Romeo, in typical fashion, answered right back as Kosovich again found Cushingberry - this time form 15 yards out - to finish the first half scoring at 21-7.  Brent Newsom (5 att., 64 yds., 1 TD) raced in from 27 yards out at the 8:38 mark of the third quarter to increase the lead to 28-7.  Later in the same quarter Brent Brown (6 att., 79 yds. 1 TD) was sprung on a great block by Bret McCarrey and raced 57 yards to the house to widen the gap to 35-7.  The icing on the cake was applied by Matthew Taylor when he picked off an errant Stallions pass and went 85 yards to pay dirt to make the score 42-7.
Sterling Heights would take up 11 minutes of the fourth quarter and score from 1 yard out to make the final score Romeo 42 - Sterling Heights 14.  The Romeo defense was lead by Andre Fullwood with 9 tackles and Jesse Schneider and Matthew Taylor each had interceptions.

Week 4:  Grosse Pointe South
Varsity:  The Bulldogs rolled to a 40-21 win over Grosse Pointe South.  If you were at the game and blinked or if you got there a few minutes after the kick off you were in for a pleasant surprise as Romeo was winning 21-0 - with seven minutes left in the first quarter!  The Bulldogs employed a bit of trickery to score their first touchdown on a flee flicker of sorts from Blake Cushingberry to a wide open Nick Kosovich from 25 yards out at 10:54 of the first quarter.  After a quick three-and-out by G.P. South, Romeo promptly struck again at the 9:17 mark on a 10 yard pass from Kosovich (8-15, 144 yards, 3 TD's) to Joe Wilson (2 rec., 85 yards, 2 TD's).  Robbie Flinn boomed the ensuing kick off for a touch back forcing South to start at their own 20 yard line and a couple of plays later Brent Newsom picked off a pass at mid-field and took it all the way home to give the Bulldog's a 21-0 lead at 7:01 of the first quarter.  The blowout was in play - or at least it seemed because the next 2 scores came from South and at 3:51 of the third quarter it was Romeo 21 and South 14.
On Romeo's very next possession Kosovich connected with Joe Wilson on a 75 yard touchdown pass to spark the offense and put the Bulldog's back up 2 touchdown's 28-14.  South did respond with a 9 yard touchdown pass of their own at 4:52 of the fourth quarter to make the score Romeo 28 South 21 and it was game on again.  Fortunately Brent Brown (7 att., 75 yards, 1 TD) answered the call less than a minute later to find pay dirt from 45 yards out to put Romeo out of reach 35-21.  Brent Newsom (11 att., 92 yards) finished the scoring for Romeo on a 10 yard pass from Kosovich at 1:05 to make the final score Romeo 40 and South 21.  Once again the defense provided a great team effort with contributions coming from every position including Brendon Biache (10 tackles - 1 for a loss), Andre Fullwood (8 tackles and 1 sack), Doug Lemerand (7 tackles and 2 sacks), Matt Distelrath (7 tackles) and James Reynolds (5 tackles - 1 for a loss).  Mark Bacci and Derrick Gaffke also contributed 2 sacks each.  Jesse Schneider had an interception along with Newsom (who returned his for a TD).  Matthew Taylor also picked off a pass in our end zone to end a key drive for South.

"Strong passing game helps Romeo to 40-21 win" (Romeo Observer)

The J.V. lost another tough game 23-0.  Keep your heads up boys that first win is right around the corner.

Freshman:
The Freshman Bulldogs (4-0) unbeaten streak reaches 4 games with a 14-0 victory over Grosse Pointe South.  The tenacious Bulldog defense forced a couple of key turnovers to preserve their second consecutive shutout.  Great team effort boys!

Week 3:  Utica
Varsity:  The Varsity Bulldog offense broke it's leash and ran away to a 43-0 victory over Utica! Brent Brown (8 carries, 47 yards, 1 TD) found the end zone first for the Bulldog's on a 21 yard run at 4:19 of the first quarter.  A penalty on the extra point attempt prompted Romeo to go for two and they converted on a 1 yard pass from Nick Kosovich (6-17, 64 yards) to Blake Cushingberry.  Less than 2 minutes later Brent Newsom (7 carries, 105 yards, 3 TD's) tallied his first of three touchdowns on a 38 yard scamper.  Robert Flinn converted on his first of five extra points to make the score 15-0.  Newsom bulled his way in from 3 yards out late in the second quarter to put Romeo up 22-0 at the half.  On the Bulldog's first possession of the third quarter Newsom broke loose for a 37 yard score and less than 1 minute later the Bulldog's would tally a defensive score when Jason Schirmer recovered a botched punt snap in the end zone.  Bret McCarrey (5 carries, 63 yards, 1 TD) would complete the scoring for Romeo taking it to the house on a 47 yard touchdown run at 4:37 of the third quarter.  In total the Bulldogs rushed for 288 yards on 33 carries.  The Romeo defense earned its first shutout of the season and extended its streak to 6 consecutive quarters in which it has held the opponent scoreless.  The Dawgs once again played extremely well as a unit on defense and limited the Utica offense to 40 yards total (23 rushing and 17 passing).  Matt Distelrath (6 tackles, 2 for losses) again led the attack with plenty of support from the Bacci Boyz (Marc - 6 tackles, 2 for losses and John - 3 tackles), Erin Laurain (4 tackles, 2 for losses) and James Reynolds (3 tackles for losses).  Great TEAM EFFORT!

Week 2:  Warren Cousino
Varsity:  In a game riddled with turnovers and penalties (Romeo had 4 lost fumbles, 1 interception and 5 penalties for 65 yards; Cousino had 4 lost fumbles, 1 interception and 10 penalties for 80 yards) the Bulldogs once again found themselves down at the end of the first half - this time 14-0 to a big and physical Cousino team.  And although the Bulldog's did put themselves in a position to at least tie the game late in the fourth quarter they came up just a little short losing 14-7.  The Bulldog's only score came at 6:05 of the fourth quarter on a 7 yard TD pass from Nick Kosovich (10-23, 90 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.) to Ricky Roth (4 rec., 56 yards, 1 TD).  The defense was lead by Matt Distelrath (8 tackles, 1 fumble recovery) and Derrick Gaffke (5 tackles - 1 for a loss, and 1 sack).  Brent Newsom had an interception and Brendan Biache (2 sacks), Andy Stebbins (1 sack and 1 fumble recovery) and Doug Lemerand (2 fumble recoveries) also had strong games on defense.  Brent Brown led the Bulldog rushing attack with 87 hard fought yards on 14 carries.  Chalk this one up as a character builder and keep believing boys - there is a lot of football stiil to be played!

J.V.:  Bulldogs came back from a 13-0 deficit to take the lead 14-13, however, Cousino scored late in the game to take the lead 19-14.  Cousino was successful on the 2-point conversion to make it 21-14.  The Bulldog's first score came on a perfectly thrown fade pass from Alex Rashid to Austin Coniglio.  Luke Lovasco, who had injured his knee earlier in the game, found the end zone on a QB draw for the Bulldog's second TD of the night..  Trailing 21-14 Romeo did have the ball down at the Cousino 4 yard line with 6 seconds left in the game but were not able to score.  Great game guys - way to hang tough!

"Freshman team comes from behind to beat Cousino"

Week 1:  Chippewa Valley
Varsity:  Bulldogs Bite Back!

It was another Romeo-Chippewa nail biter but this time the Bulldogs came out on top 21-16!
Due to lightning the Varsity game was halted at half time and would not be finished until the next day resulting in what seemed like two mini games that were as different as night and day - literally and figuratively!  In the first half the Bulldogs found themselves on defense for nearly 19 of the 24 minutes as they fell to a 16-7 defecit at the half.  The only score for the Bulldogs came on a 3 yard run by Brent Brown (2 TD's - 1 rushing, 1 receiving).  Joe Wilson (3 rec., 46 yds.), on a pass from Nick Kosovich (9-18, 132 yds.. 1 TD), made a nice catch in traffic at the Chippewa Valley 3 yard line to set up the score.  When play resumed the next day our Bulldogs, being the "True Believer's" that they are, showed up ready to play and came out swinging.  The defense (led by James Reynolds and Brent Newsom with 4 tackles each) played exceptionally well as a team and forced Chippewa Valley to turn the ball over on downs on their first possession of the second half.  And the rest, as they say, is history.  The Bulldog offense had the ball for over 14 minutes in the second half to grind out the win.  Nick Kosovich (7 carries, 57 yds., 1 TD) scampered 28 yards on fourth-and-one for a TD to bring Romeo within 2 points late in the third quarter.  And at 8:56 of the fourth quarter the Bulldogs took the lead for good on a 24 yard TD pass form Kosovich to Brent Brown.  With 6:52 left in the game Romeo got the ball on their own 10 yard line and needed to put together a drive to eat away at the clock.  And that they did as they were able to move all the way down to the Chippewa Valley 26 yard line and take nearly 6  minutes off the clock before turning the ball over on downs.  A critical play came up early in drive when, on third-and-ten from the Romeo 10 yard line, Kosovich rolled to his right and connected with Ricky Roth (2 rec's., 42 yards) for a 36 yard completion to keep the drive alive.  The game did come down to the very end however as Chippewa Valley got the ball back on their own 26 yard line with 1 minute left on the clock.  Within a couple of plays they were all the way down to the Romeo 21 yard line.  On fourth-and-ten with 21 seconds left on the clock Brendan Biache intercepted the pass to seal the victory for the Bulldog's!  The Bulldog's were well prepared which is indicative of competitive practices and hard work from all the players and coaches.
