Romeo Bulldogs Beat Warren Cousino 14-6 to for a season record of 4-2!!

Romeo Bulldog Varsity Football team beat the Warren Cousino Patriots 14—6 on a night that can only be described as miserable from a weather perspective.  The temperature at game time was 45 degrees, it was raining and the wind was blowing 15 to 20 mph, some would call it true football weather.  While the score was relatively close, the game wasn’t close at all.  The Bulldog defense once again was rock solid and held the Patriots to no points through 3 ½ quarters.  The defense held them to 3 plays and out 6 times and a 7th time Cousino went for it on 4th down and were not successful.  The Romeo offense was equally effective but was plagued by penalties that resulted in 2 touchdowns being called back and another 35 yard run that took us to the Cousino 5 yard line which was also called back.
Romeo senior Brian Roth received the ball on the Romeo 10 yard line to start the game and ran the ball 50 yards back to the Cousino 40 yard line but because of a hold the ball was brought back to Romeo 45 yard line.  3 plays later on 3rd and 17 senior Zack Williams caught a screen pass on the Romeo 35 and ran the ball in for a touchdown.  Unfortunately, the play was called back for an illegal block.  Romeo’s second attempt at the 3rd down play wasn’t successful and Romeo punted into the wind leaving the Patriots in good field position at their own 40.

Cousino’s first possession was telling about how the defense was going to play for the evening.  While they got one first down during their 7 plays, they were hard fought yardage.  It was a big night for seniors, Joe Gardner, Joe Bacci, Troy Zibkowski, Brian Sorenson and Dalton Binkowski along with juniors Austin Doan and Bernard Austin and finally sophomore Blake Williams.  The Cousino drive ended when they went for it on 4th and 4 but Joe Bacci stopped their running back right at the line of scrimmage and Romeo took over on downs at their own 41 yard line.
The next drive for Romeo was much more fruitful.  The Bulldogs offense ran 5 running plays 3 to Brian Roth, one of which was a great run around end 23 yards to the Cousino 19 yard line.  The next play Zack Williams got the ball on trap play and covered the remaining 19 yards into the end zone for a touchdown.  Romeo 7—Cousino 0.
The balance of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter went back and forth where Romeo’s defense held the Patriots and the resulting punts into the wind were short giving the Bulldogs good field position.  One particular time Romeo was in good field position after a short Cousino punt into the wind.  The Bulldogs passed 3 straight times, the first two were incomplete but the third was a great pass by a sophomore Zack Rizo, who was recently brought up to the varsity team, Rizo threw a bullet to Joe Gardner for a touchdown.  Romeo 14—Cousino 0.  Cousino had one more possession to end the first half.

The third quarter came and went with no additional scoring.  The Bulldog defense was in rare form; Joe Bacci had 3 unassisted sacks in this game, one in particular he crushed the quarter back with a blind side hit.  Sam Bruner had a nice sack as well.  Brian Sorensen had a timely interception at the 5 yard line, when the Patriots were finally moving the ball, then a nice run after the interception out to the Cousino 25 yard line.
With just about 4 minutes left in the game Romeo had to punt on 4th down with the ball on their own 15 yard line.  Unfortunately, there was a mishap with the snap and they couldn’t get the punt off and turned the ball over on downs at their own 5 yard line.  I was surprised there were nt more turnovers considering the weather conditions.  The defense did a nice job at the line and but on third down from the 1 yard line Cousino finally scored for 6 point but missed the extra point.
The Patriots tried a very unique and effective on-sides kick, they huddled everybody around the ball and the kicker had a great slow bouncer right at a single player 10 yard away.  In the end the a Romeo player, whom I could not see because he was immediately attached by 11 Cousino player, came up with the ball.  Romeo took over at the 50 yard line with 2:48 left in the game.  Romeo did a great job on the ground, the just kept handing it off to Joe Bacci and he kept driving it forward.  Romeo needed one first down to eat up the clock and they got it and took a knee to end the game.

Final thought; the Romeo kicking at the beginning of the season was suspect at best.  Tonight I think they dispelled everybody’s concerns , Rasmus Skovborg made two extra points and one of his kickoffs went through the end zone.  Senior Mike Ferrell kicked a punt, with the wind, from his own 5 yard line all the way to the Cousino 19 yard line.  That is a 76 yard punt.  Lastly, the Bulldogs have resorted to quick kicks in 4th down and long situations, when they are at mid field, they have been very effective with this strategy from a shotgun formation.  This was another great win for the Bulldogs and we look forward to 3 more regular season wins.  Please join us next week at the Romeo Bulldogs Homecoming game, remember to come early to enjoy the Homecoming festivities.
