Romeo Bulldogs move to 500 for the season with a victory over Sterling Heights Stallions 45-8

From the moment the game began it was all Bulldogs.  Romeo kicked off to the Sterling Heights Stallions to start the game and the first play from the line of scrimmage resulted in a turnover after a fumble was recovered by senior Jake Mulrenin.  Four plays later Zack Williams found the end zone on a one yard slant play.  The Stallions fumbled a second time on the kickoff and Romeo Senior Ellis Weeks recovered the ball on the Stallions 36 yard line.
After a Romeo holding call on first down put the Bulldogs back to the Sterling Heights 49 yard line Romeo senior Brian Roth had a 34 yard run around end for a Romeo first down.  Three plays later junior Evan Richardson threw a perfect screen pass to Brian Roth at the 15 yard line and Brian fought his way to the end zone for another Romeo touchdown with 8:22 left in the first quarter.
The fans finally got their chance to see the Romeo defense and were not disappointed.  When the Stallions ran the ball seniors Jake Mulrenin, Joe Bacci, Dalton Binkowski, and Brad Reckling along with juniors Joe Gardner and Austin Bernard held them at the line.  When the Stallions went to the air Romeo had great coverage by Troy Zibkowski, Austin Bernard and Ellis Weeks.  Romeo got the ball back after a Sterling Heights punt and scored another 3 point with a 25 yard field goal by Junior Rasmus Skovborg.  Skovborg is really starting to get a rhythm on the field goals and the game of football.  The next possession for the Stallions was once again an opportunity for the defense to show their stuff; senior Ellis Weeks intercepted the ball at the Stallions 35 yard line and ran it back for the third Romeo touchdown of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Romeo coaches started putting in more substitutions which gave the Sterling Heights team some glimmer of hope.  Before the half ended senior Jon Rauen had an interception, the Romeo offense was caught for a safety and the Stallions scored their first and only touchdown of the game bringing the score to Romeo 24-Stallions 8 at the half.
Romeo received the ball to start the second half and scored another touchdown three plays later on a pass play to Brian Roth in the end zone.  On their next possession the Stallions started to move the ball until Joe Bacci tipped a pass over the right side of the line and caught his own tip for an interception.  At this point the Romeo coaches made an investment in their future and started cycling the players and getting some playing time for some new faces.  Along the way Joe Gardner had a great interception and ran the ball back to 23 yard to the Stallions 14 yard line.  Joe Gardner received the call on a slant play on first down and fought his way into the end zone with a second and third effort that any college scout would surely take note of.  The Romeo defense held the Stallions to 3 plays and out when the Romeo second string offense showed us what they had.  The coaches put senior Brad Gardner in at quarterback with junior Dwight Towne behind him in the backfield and junior Enrico Raciti as a wide receiver along with a new offensive line in front of them.  These new faces showed the fans that there definitely is a future for Romeo football.  These guys had a great drive with Brad Gardner throwing the ball to Raciti for a nice gain, Brad Gardner also ran a perfectly executed option play on fourth down and pitched it out to Towne.  Towne fought his way around the end all the way to the Stallions 5 yard line.  It was a great run by Towne, he broke too many tackles to count and just kept driving.  Towne got the call 2 plays later and ran it through the middle on another hard fought run, this time for a touchdown.

This brought the score to Romeo 45-Stallions 8 and that is where the third quarter ended.  With a greater than 35 point differential, the referee’s started a running clock for the entire 4th quarter.  Romeo had a few more notable runs by senior Ryan Nicely and Dwight Towne.

As expected, the Stallions went to the air when they got the ball and senior Thomas Strandquist along with Alex Sharp, Zack Beach and Denzel Jones did a great job of rushing to cause some quick passes and also got a sack along the way.  Dwight Towne, Austin Keller, Denzel Jones and Austin Wagner did a nice job on coverage as well.  Romeo got the ball back on downs with 2:00 left on the clock and took a knee for three downs to end the game.  After the game, at the 4 corners, I asked Dwight Towne how he felt about the game and his performance.  Towne said he was “a little surprised and very pleased” about his performance.  The fans and coaches on the Romeo side line were very pleased with his performance as well.

Final thought; it is always fun to win but the Romeo team and coaching staff won with class.  They didn’t run up the score, the tested out some new plays and line ups and they showed their fans that the Bulldogs are the best 2 and 2 team in the state.  We are looking forward to five more awesome regular season games.  See you at the Watchdog Game were Bulldogs will be playing football for a cause!!
