Romeo Bulldogs defeats Troy Colts 16-3

If you look at the statistics on the game it was pretty even. I showed a total of 23 minutes 52 seconds for Romeo and 24 minutes 8 seconds for Troy in this game. There were costly penalties for both sides but when it came right down to it, Romeo was able to overcome their penalties and fortunately for us Troy was not. I would also say that the reason Troy was not able to overcome their penalties was clearly because the Romeo defense didn’t allow them to.The Bulldog took a lead in the first quarter when Romeo’s Brian Roth received the opening kickoff at the Romeo 5 yard line and ran it back 35 yards to the Romeo 40. From there Roth, Joe Bacci and Zack Williams took turns running the ball 3 to 9 yards at a pop for 7 plays when the Bulldogs found themselves in a 4th and 4 situation at the Troy 19 yard line and decided to go for the 1st down. The coaches called a pass play to Sam Brunner, he caught the ball at the Troy 15, enough for the first down, but Brunner didn’t quit with a first down and fought his way to the first score of the game. Romeo missed the extra point and the score was 6-0. |

At 7:53 in the first Troy took over after a 15 yard kickoff return and started their first drive at their own 30 yard line. After 13 plays from the line of scrimmage and several penalties Troy scored their first 3 points with a 21 yard field goal to bring the score to 6-3. It was a hard fought drive for Troy though, the defense, specifically Joe Bacci, Dalton Binkowski, Jalen Brooks, Ellis Weeks and Troy Zibkowski were rock solid on the ground and Brian Sorensen and Jon Rauen covered the Troy receiver to end the Troy drive forcing the Colts to go for 3 point rather than 7.

The Bulldogs kicked off to start the second half and the Colts ate up 6 minutes off the clock on a 13 play drive that started at their own 15 yard line and again came up empty. Troy Zibkowski had a great hit on a quarterback keeper, he hit him at full tilt and rung his bell. Great hit Troy, you get the hit of the game award!! Joe Bacci, Adam Davis and Jalen Brooks did a great job in the middle of the line this drive which ended with the Colts punting. From this point in the third quarter it went back and forth with no points added by either team. Romeo ended the quarter with a perfectly executed 3rd down pass play by Evan Richardson, it started as a pass play and appeared to be a broken play because there were no open receivers. Evan tucked the ball into his arm like he was going around the end and the defensive back committed to his run when he pulled up before the line of scrimmage and threw a strike to Sam Brunner one more time to end the 3rd quarter with a first down. |

The Bulldogs and Colts went back and forth through the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter when the first turnovers happened. The first turnover was an interception at midfield by Jon Rauen, Rauen had a great runback to the 10 yard line but because of a penalty was called back to about the 35. The second turn over of the game happened during the same drive when Romeo kicked a punt to the Troy 13 yard line; the Troy receiver didn’t get far enough out of the way when he let the ball go over his head and the ball took an odd bounce and hit him the ankle and was recovered by Romeo. A holding penalty took the bulldogs back to the 21, we moved the ball back to the Troy 10 yard line and in a 4th and 7 situation, Romeo kicked a 29 yard field goal bring the score to 16-3. On the next set of downs for Troy the Bulldogs defense again made the stop. As was expected Troy came out passing and the Romeo pass rush was awesome keeping the pressure on the quarterback. Troy had to punt the ball with just over 3 minutes left and that was, more or less, the end of the game. Troy got the ball back for one more play before the end of the game. |
I would like to share one more thought. The Bulldogs LOOKED GOOD as the game wound down. The Bulldogs were hitting hard from start to finish and while they looked sweaty, they stayed strong and looked like they could play another 2 quarters if they needed to. The Colts on the other hand were dropping like flies in the 4th quarter. The Bulldogs were a much better conditioned team than the Colts. Which leads me to my next statement; thanks boys for your commitment and taking your conditioning serious this summer, it paid off in spade this game, you looked strong. Final Thought: A Colt is just a Pony. |
